Festival dates, expected stars, films in Competition… All the info on the 75th edition

If the 2021 edition did not fail to mark the spirits with the big blunder of Spike Lee, the coronation of Titanium by Julia Ducournau, the Palme d’or d’honneur awarded to Jodie Foster, the sculptural appearance of Sophie Marceau on the red carpet, the arrival of Matt Damon and Sharon Stone on the Croisette, but also of Catherine Deneuve, in great shape for his return to the photographers, this Cannes Film Festival 2022 promises to be just as full of surprises. After 30 years without setting foot in Cannes, Tom Cruise will be back on the Croisette this year with Top Gun: Maverickthe long-awaited sequel (and presented as a world premiere) of the cult film that revealed it in 1986. Films in official competition, celebrities expected on the red carpet at the Palais des Festivals… Here is everything you need to know on this 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival.

Festival dates

After a year 2021 under health crisis, where the famous Cannes International Film Festival was exceptionally held in July, for this year 2022 things are returning to normal. This 75th edition will therefore take place in the spring, from Tuesday May 17 to Saturday May 28, 2022.

The Jury

For the time being, the identity of the members of the jury for this 2022 edition has not yet been revealed. Who will succeed Spike Lee to chair the Festival jury? And which renowned members, like Mylène Farmer last year, will be there? Only the mistress of ceremonies for this 75th edition has been announced. The divine Belgian actress Virginie Efira will thus be in charge of presenting the opening and closing ceremonies of this Cannes 2022, taking over from Doria Tillier. At the helm also and soon to be at the Festival, Iris Knobloch who will succeed Pierre Lescure on July 1 as President of the Cannes Film Festival. She will be the first woman to hold this position for three years (i.e. the 2023, 2024 and 2025 editions of the Festival).

The official selection

On Thursday April 14, the Festival announced the list of films present on the Croisette this year. And it is with an astonishing zombie film that Thierry Frémaux and Pierre Lescure have decided to open the festivities! Indeed, the bloody feature film Z (AS Z) by French director Michel Hazanavicius will open this 75th edition. Presented Out of Competition, this film (which will also be released in cinemas in France on May 17), carried by actors Romain Duris and Bérénice Bejo, is the remake of the Japanese horror comedy One cut of the dead (don’t cut) by Shinichiro Ueda. Also screened at Cannes this year, Quentin Dupieux’s new comedy, Smoking makes you cough, in the midnight session. Discover the list of selected films:

A beautiful poster

On Tuesday April 19, the Festival poster was unveiled. And moviegoers immediately recognized an image from a cult film: The Truman Show by Peter Weir, with Jim Carrey. If you haven’t seen the famous film with Jim Carrey (which has changed a lot since its debut), jump directly to the next paragraph, it would be a shame to spoil the ending for you. Because indeed, the image that serves as the basis for the poster of the 75th Cannes Film Festival is taken from the end of the film, when the main character opens the door that will allow him to come out, for the first time in his life, from the bubble in which he is constantly spied on by thousands of cameras. To present this superb graphic creation, the site speaks of a “poetic celebration of the elusive and freedom. An ascent to overlook the past and move towards the promise of renewal“.

The stars expected on the Croisette

It’s well known: in Cannes, the stars put on a show, whether on the red carpet, with the endless dress accidents and ever more glamorous looks, or on the big screen with their unforgettable performances! This 2022 edition should be no exception to the rule and see a slew of celebrities from around the world land on the Côte d’Azur. Among the figures of the 7th art most awaited on the Croisette, there is obviously Tom Cruise who had not returned to the Festival for 30 years, but also the Frenchie Marion Cotillard (in the cast of Arnaud Desplechin’s film in Competition). Another giant of Hollywood cinema, Tom Hanks should make the trip to the Cannes Film Festival this year, to Elvis, an Elvis Presley biopic by Baz Luhrman. The actor with two Oscars embodies in this film Colonel Tom Parker, famous impresario of Elvis Presley, often presented as a bad manager who would have exploited the singer in an unreasonable way… The feature film The Crimes of the Future (in Competition) by David Cronenberg also promises a nice red carpet: are expected in front of the photographers, the stars Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux and Kristen Stewart. In the cast of James Gray’s film in Competition, Anne Hathaway, Anthony Hopkins and Jeremy Strong could also come to the Croisette. As for the French actors, Gilles Lellouche, Anaïs Demoustier, Adèle Exarchopoulos or even Doria Tillier could well be in the game.

How to follow the Festival

In 2022, the Cannes Film Festival is no longer teaming up with its historic broadcaster Canal+ – which for decades has allowed the public to follow the opening and closing ceremonies in clear, as well as the traditional and daily climbs of the steps -, and promises to write “a new page in the history of the event”. Indeed, a brand new system will be put in place during this 75th edition to cover the festivities in partnership with France Télévisions and the Brut media. “Thanks to all the antennas of France Télévisions (the France 2, France 3, France 5 and Culture Box channels, editor’s note) and to the presence of Brut. in more than 80 countries, our new media partners will provide unprecedented coverage. and wide of the event both in France and internationally”, ensures by press release the organization of the Festival. More details to come on the different ways to follow the festival on a daily basis.
